Having meaningful volunteer experiences is crucial to your application to any medical field.  Here in Peterborough, there are several organizations that offer volunteering placements.

 

Peterborough Regional Health Centre

PRHC offers volunteering placements in both patient care (i.e. Intensive Care, Emergency, Maternal Child) and non patient care (i.e. Gift shop, Information Desk, Way Finding). Shifts are generally 3 hours long and once a week. If you are interested in volunteering at PRHC register for one of the information sessions by either calling (705) 876-5066 or sending an email to  volunteers@prhc.on.ca

 

YES Shelter for Youth and Families

YES offers several opportunities such as administrative support, sorting/organizing and helping with recreational activities.  Required availability varies for each opportunity which allows you to find what works best for you. The volunteer application form can be found here.

 

Peterborough Park and Zoo

The Peterborough Park and Zoo has a seasonal volunteer program and an education program.  This would be a great volunteer opportunity for anyone interested in the veterinary field. More information about the programs and application process can be found here.

 

Alzheimer Society

The Alzheimer Society assists people with various stages of dementia in the Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes area. A great volunteer placement they offer is Friendly Visiting where you visit a client for a couple hours a week. You can also volunteer as a public education ambassador or a support group facilitator.  Registration for volunteering can be found here.

 

Christian Horizons 

Christian Horizons is an organization that assists people with exceptional needs and provides services like supported independent living and day programs for the community. They offer a variety of volunteering opportunities such as helping with special events, recreational assistance and the Be a Friend program. Peterborough Children’s Water Festival 

The PCWF is an annual event that aims to educate children on how to live sustainably with water. Volunteers participate in running activities, greeting children and directing groups. To find out more about volunteering go here.
